Road Trip

July 16-29, 2022

It would appear that I’ve completely forgotten that I’m maintaining a blog. So expect a flurry of posts covering a couple months time until I’m caught back up. At which point it will be almost daily posts as I’ve got a ton of sports to cover.

The Road Trip

The point of the trip was to see the country and visit a bunch of colleges that my son was interested in. The first step was to actually leave the country. It’s a bit faster to cut through Canada to head to Michigan. And since we were doing that, we took a bit of a detour to Toronto to visit the Hockey Hall of Fame. Obviously though, you can’t take that path without stopping at Niagara Falls. I’d never been there before but it was the second time for Aiden.

And then the actual Hall of Fame.

From there it was on to Michigan where we spent a couple days to check out the University of Michigan.

The next target was the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs. Which meant a couple days of driving through Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska and Colorado.

And finally, we arrived in Colorado Springs. This involved a tour of their brand new kinesiology building, the main campus and a soccer camp over the course of three days. And of course, some hiking through the gorgeous mountains.

The next stop was Wichita State, which involved a lot of driving through the flattest emptiest landscapes I’ve ever seen.

The last stop was Penn State but that meant a few stops along the way. First up was Kansas City where we had dinner at Joe’s Kansas City BBQ. Which may have been the best meal I’ve ever eaten. If you’re in the area, do your taste buds a favor and stop. It’s also a gas station, so you can fill up your car and your belly at the same time.

We stopped at the Indianapolis Speedway Museum for a look at their museum.

Next up was Pittsburgh, where we went to see the Monroeville Mall, where they shot one of the all time great horror movies, Dawn of the Dead. These are cell phone photos as I didn’t want to wander around a mall with the big camera.

And finally, a stop to check out Penn State before heading back home. Two weeks, two nations, five universities, thirteen states and about 5,000 miles driven.
